Life isn’t possible without it. We just would not live without it.
We do it every few seconds, every day of our lives, without really thinking about it.
We take it for granted.
It is the one thing we share with every living being on the face of earth.
You are doing it as you read this.
In times when you feel most stressed and overwhelmed, without realizing it, you start taking short shallow breaths. The pace of life leaves us out of breath.
In the creation story, life enters humankind as God breathes into the nostrils of the one ‘created in God’s image’. How easily we forget. We live as if we can get what we deeply yearn for by running faster, trying harder, doing more, buying more.
When I lead retreats I invite participants to become aware of their breathing.
I invite you to slow down. Take a few deep breaths. To feel your chest expand with every breathe. How it moves back in as you breathe out.
As you do, may you remember that your life is a gift.
That all will be well.
That you are the Beloved.
That with every breath, you are praying the name of God.
